Lot Title: 1846-O PCGS MS-63
Lot Number: 518
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 8 graded MS-63, 5 higher at PCGS. Unlike the case for 1859-O and 1860-O, for which a full mint bag of each was found to exist during the 1960s, no hoard of 1846-O silver dollars has ever been (or will likely ever be) discovered. Thus, it remains a very elusive issue in high grade, with MS-63 examples showing a particularly low and stable population as noted. Indeed, quick perusal of the popular report suggests that it would be nearly impossible to improve upon this choice example by more than a couple of points in quality. Strong popularity of the issue with collectors stems from the fact that it was the first and only silver dollar struck at a branch mint during the 1840s. Fortunately, the present example offers much of what the majority of collectors should be seeking, with roving mint luster especially notable on both sides. A faint touch of butterscotch-grey tints the rims on both sides, with some dusky album color touching the lower left area of the reverse.
