Lot Title: 1873-CC Arrows PCGS MS-62
Lot Number: 446
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 3 graded MS-62, 14 higher at PCGS. The 1873-CC half-dollar shares the same fate as other Carson City halves of the era, namely that very few are known to exist at the uncirculated era. Evidently, Americans living in the furthest reaches out west preferred only hard-money assets as compared to paper, which led to heavy usage and circulation of larger denominations as a store of value. Given the strength of luster, not to mention the relatively pleasing details, one might easily make a case for the MS-63 grade, in this instance. Shimmering frosty luster supports the pleasing interplay of coral-gold and silver-beige interacting over both sides, with gorgeous rainbow color starting to form just inside the rims. That being said, the grade limiting factor would undoubtedly be the presence of some relatively innocuous pin scratches scattered beneath the eagle's neck. They are mostly toned over, making them basically blend into the rest of the field, and fortunately, the coin otherwise shows no particular problem with contact, as the obverse looks especially fresh and free from issues.
