Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1915-S Panama-Pacific Octagonal PCGS UNC details/cleaned
Lot Number: 885
Description: Both dies feature interesting "pimple effect" which has resulted in microscopic raised dots everywhere, and a tiny die crack snakes through the first "F" in FIFTY. Strike doubling shows for several letters in STATES OF. Certainly, evidence of cleaning cannot be denied since both sides display fairly prominent hairlining, especially toward the central devices. Such injustice is hardly uncommon for these large gold coins, since such a hefty chunk of gold represented a sizable investment for all but the most wealthy, and one can certainly understand the desire of contemporary owners to keep their precious treasure as clean and bright as possible. That said, one might suspect delicate tooling of the owl's left (observed) leg. In the big scheme of things, the bottom line still is that these works of art are popular in every conceivable grade, and even a relatively lightly impaired example like this will readily find a new home.
