Lot Title: 1860-O PCGS AU-50
Lot Number: 418
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 40,000. 3 graded AU-50, six higher at PCGS. The extreme rarity of 1860-O in high grade (and for that matter, it is an exceptionally tough issue in circulated grades) speaks both to low production, and high attrition as the nation entered upon the verge of war in 1860. PCGS has never certified an example at the mint-state level, although NGC suggests that two or three do exist. Given the paucity of nice examples, it is a pleasure to note excellent surface quality for this subdued, dove-grey example. Normal, original patina enshrouds the entire coin, accented briefly here and there by denim-blue iridescence. Unlike the fate seen for many circulated examples, there are zero problems noted here. A fantastic opportunity for the Seated Dime specialist!
