Lot Title: 1835 PCGS PR-64
Lot Number: 411
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. JR-4 begins attribution by noting the low placement of an oversized 3 in the date. The total proof emission for 1835 consists of two die-marriages (JR-1 being the other), but mintage can only be estimated at perhaps ten pieces, making this an exceptionally rare opportunity. At first glance, a proof striking for 1835 might not be easily distinguished from a coin intended for circulation, but close examination sets to rest all possible arguments. The definition is nothing short of incredible for this diminutive coin, so powerful that the obverse stars have all been brought to an amazing degree of precision, and the eagle's head actually shows complete delineation of a raised engraver's line completely around the mouth. The (most likely) specially prepared planchet displays some dull reflectivity, dimmed perhaps by splashes of russet-honey toning, especially within the obverse right field. A curling strike-through above 8 in the date establishes an excellent pedigree marker.
