Lot Title: 1866 Double-struck J-517 PCGS PR-63BN
Lot Number: 379
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Judd-517, Pollock-544 incorporates a patriotic bust of George Washington on the obverse mated to a reverse used for the "no rays" shield nickel. It is an extremely rare issue within the pattern series, struck in copper in proof format. Deep ebony-brown patina graces this extremely sharp example, but we note that the reverse was struck twice, with the die rotated substantially out of position for the second striking. Strangely enough, the obverse was also struck twice, but with much less rotation between strikings, resulting in an utterly astonishing "mint error" for a production that should have been executed with extraordinary attention to detail. Hands-down one of the most fascinating coins in today's sale. The error, obvious though it may be, was not noted by PCGS.
