Lot Title: 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair Olympic Games Participation Medal
Lot Number: 364
Description: Gadoury-2. Bronze, octagonal, 44.4 mm diameter. Although a portion of the original box accompanies this remarkable medal, it is in poor condition due simply to age, although this in no way alters its excessive rarity. CATALOGER'S NOTE: Information herein incorporates condensed data from Stack's esteemed description (Baltimore Auction, 11/2012, Lot#192).

The first internationally recognized Olympics games was held in Athens in 1896, and observed a second time in Paris in 1900. 1904 saw St. Louis host the third games, held in conjunction with the massive Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, which completely overshadowed the games, resulting in diminished quality for the contest. Conversely, very few medals survive from the 1904 Olympics, this humble bronze being an extremely rare exception. Surface for the medal suggests light handling, although that has resulted in rather attractive contrast between rose-bronze details over grey recesses.
