Lot Title: Collection of twenty-six uncut sheets of Missouri Defense Bonds, Eight $50/$100, Ten $20, and Eight $1/$3
Lot Number: 3
Description: One of the more remarkable currency items we have taken on recently has history right here within the historic state of Missouri. This is an accumulation of Missouri defense bonds that includes three different types of uncut and unsigned sheets, namely: eight sheets with $50 and $100 notes, ten sheets with $20 notes, and eight sheets with $1 and $3 notes. Personal inspection is MANDATORY with respect to grading and condition, but suffice it to say that these are generally UNC notes, aside from inevitable handling visible on some of the edge(s).

Many collectors of currency from the Civil War era do not realize that Missouri was actually admitted to the Confederacy without officially seceding from the Union. The Yankees ultimately gained the upper hand through the dispute over Missouri's loyalty, and two governments were in place simultaneously, the secessionists forced to "govern" from Texas.

The consignor provided Scotsman with a copy of a handwritten letter, undated but presumed to have been written decades ago. It is transcribed as follows:

Dear Mr. Anderson,

I received the Confederate Bonds from my grandmother (not a blood relative). She died in 1947. I was born in 1869 so these bonds could have come from her father. Her father was Col. Hereford and was in the House of Representatives, State of Missouri.

She married a man twenty years older than she and he died around 1920 and she served on the Bank Board of the Salisbury Savings Bank for years and was a widow for 3 years. She attended Stephens college 1886 - 1887.

I hope this will give you some information about the bonds.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
