Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1841 PCGS PR-66 BN CACCAC
Lot Number: 157
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Newcomb-1 is a proof-only die-marriage, with the obverse die only used here, while the reverse die later struck 1842 N-2 large cents. Velvet-soft patina graces both sides with royal crimson-gold and magenta-blue shades that belie the PCGS "BN" designation. Bringing the vibrant colors into view also reveals lovely reflectivity within the fields, augmented by the razor-fine sharpness of the devices. A couple of stars lack absolute completion on the obverse, while the reverse seems to show no weakness anywhere. The best pedigree marker is most likely a delicate abrasion just beneath Liberty's eye -- the only abrasion that can practically be located on the entire coin.
