Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1793 Chain America S-3 ANACS F-12
Lot Number: 142
Description: Sheldon-13 can most easily be identified by the way "R" in LIBERTY leans toward the right on the obverse, while the reverse shows AMERICA fully spelled out. It is the most common chain cent die-marriage, with estimates suggesting that it accounts for about half of the remaining known examples. The present copper achieved a straight grade of F-12 at ANACS way back when they still used their famed small-size holders, and the quality certainly befits the grade in this case. Absolutely delightful nut-brown patina lays consistently over the entire surface, and appears to be completely original, with no evidence of recoloring or any other type of "adjustment". A couple of linear planchet striations on the obverse lie away from the primary focal point, so that they are scarcely noticeable, and a few unimportant, old curving scratches scatter about LIBERTY. Astonishingly enough, the peripheral areas still display remnants of flowline texture within the protected areas, and all lettering is completely readable on both sides.
