Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1849 WB-102 (labeled incorrectly), FS-301 RPD PCGS XF-45
Lot Number: 741
Description: Wiley-Bugert-102 (R.5), FS-301 repunched date, die pair 9. The PCGS label is half wrong although the Fivaz-Stanton attribution is correct. This haphazardly repunched date includes each digit repunched widely west as well as a completely errant "9" stuck in the base of Liberty's portrait. Amongst many collectors by variety, this is considered the second best WB die-pairing within the series. Minimal luster remains for this pale grey example but the details are as sharp as expected, including die polish within the vertical lines of the shield on the reverse. At one point, WB-102 was thought to be very rare, but after the book was published, many more pieces came to light, diminishing rarity from R.6+ to the present R.5.
