Lot Title: 1898 NGC MS-64
Lot Number: 490
Description: 25 graded MS-64, zero higher at NGC, making this coin essentially tied for "finest known" bragging rights at the grading service. PCGS has thrown a "plus" on a couple of like-graded coins, but all of these grading events in aggregate still amount to a very scarce date near the gem grade level, from a mintage of only 170-thousand pieces. Prior to (and after) 1898, Philadelphia was used to shoving a million pieces and more out the dock door, making 1898 a curious anomaly within their emissions.

Wonderful royal-gold hue imbues basically the whole surface, accented by very faint wintergreen accents as viewed under pure white lighting. The obverse fields and basically the entire reverse are refreshingly free from abrasions while a couple or so trivial pinscratch abrasions on the cheek attest to the grade. A tiny die crack connects the base of "1" to the rim and the neighboring "8", suggesting a middle die-state as other examples show the crack extending into other digits and the point of the bust on later coin
