Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1881 50c Octagonal BG-952 B (incorrectly labeled) PCGS MS-65
Lot Number: 342
Description: Robert Mickelson Collection. BG-952B (R.6) and incorrectly listed by PCGS as BG-957A. Medallic alignment, or nearly so as the reverse die was rotated some 30 degrees. Molten gold hue pours over the surface but does not at all affect the semi-prooflike reflectivity usually seen. In actuality, BG-952B is an early die-state of the later-struck BG-952B, for which CAL would have been partially removed from the reverse through overpolishing. It is possible for an intermediate die-state to exist, but here, CAL is very plainly bold on the rusted die, thus suggesting the PCGS mistake.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
