Lot Title: Purported 1964 Mint Set, plus four Proof Sets
Lot Number: 331
Description: Arturio James Collection. The legend of the alleged "1964 mint set" coins occasionally gets reinforced by various single pieces that appear on the market, certified as "SMS" by the legitimate services, and in that format, all are very rare. A high quality set would have to be meticulously assembled and would then be worth the cost of a nice house. That being said, the cataloger DOES NOT believe the put-together set seen here consists of actual SMS coins, but rather just normal uncirculated pieces from Philadelphia and Denver. Thus, they normally would not find themselves in auction except for one redeeming feature: all are boldly and colorfully toned. The inserts within the aftermarket cases are evidently made of cardboard and felt, and being non-inert, this seems to have induced the vivid rainbow tones seen throughout. The cents are perhaps least colorful but even they exhibit magenta and purplish overtones, all coins toned on both sides. Randomly included are proof sets dated 2x 1962 and 1964, still in government plastic. A final straggling 1958 proof set of high quality has been housed in an aftermarket 1960s holder yet retains full brilliance. All of the above is from a "closet collection" that was reported to have been in storage since the mid-1960s.
