Lot #: Go
Lot Title: Great Britain - 1844 1/3 farthing, "RE" on reverse, NGC MS-63 BN
Lot Number: 228
Description: Arturio James Collection. Mintage: 1.3 million (excluding varieties). In error, "RE" was punched into the obverse instead of the correct "REG", creating a formidable rarity within the series. The cataloger could find auction events for only two other examples, and the more common types are worth no more than a tenth of what this item should demand. On top of that, this is a phenomenally original coin that may have been mistakenly set aside as a specimen, as it displays the kind of subtle colorful iridescence over dark Hershey patina typically seen for presentation coins. Struck with tremendous precision and intended for use in Malta - 1/3-farthing was never a legal tender denomination in Great Britain proper.
Estimate: $1,500-$2,000
