Lot #: Go
Lot Title: Germany - (1142-52) brakteat Magdeburg Friedrich I Von Wettin - NGC AU-53
Lot Number: 220
Description: OBV: Archbishop holding a bishop's staff between two towers. "Bracteate" references a coin struck in very thin (some of the thinnest ever struck, in fact) silver-content metal with generally crude imagery that would be easy to impart from the dies. Also called "hollow pennies", they were intended to circulated briefly, to be called back later and turned in for subsequent struck replacements at a discount. How NGC could "graded" such a coin to such precision as AU-53 is inexplicable to the cataloger, but this is a pleasing example with lovely, old-time greyish brown patina showing throughout.
