Lot Title: 1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific Octagonal NGC MS-62+
Lot Number: 229
Description: Minimally abraded for a coin that did not meet NGC's choice grade level parameters, the surface displays a reasonably original appearance. A loupe will reveal fleeting hairlines, but seemingly not outside the context of the next numeric grade. A single copper spot above the owl's right (observed) talon is of no concern, while the lustrous, attractive yellow-gold coloration sweeps away any other hesitancy when it comes to a coin in the MS-62 range.

The Panama-Pacific gold coins were struck in San Francisco on a medal press, required to properly detail coins of such heft and magnitude, with equipment brought all the way across the country from the mint in Philadelphia. The octagonal pieces were struck before the round ones, and in either case, these represent the first fifty-dollar denomination authorized by Federal authority. There seems to have been an intended connection between the unusual eight-sided examples and "the historic fifty-dollar slug of pioneer days" (The Numismatist, August 1915). 3000 were supposed to be struck (1500 of each format), but only 645 octagonal pieces were actually made.
