Lot Title: Three Sutler scrip notes, all PMG
Lot Number: 95
Description: During the Civil War, civilian merchants followed behind various regiments and offered some of the comforts of home, including non-military clothing, tobacco and services as well as supplementary provisions to front-line soldiers. They were referred to as "sutlers" and typically contracted with a specific regiment, using scrip as a medium of exchange in lieu of official currency, which was in extremely short supply and typically of large denomination (dollar and up). Included here are 5-cent and 10-cent examples for the 1st Excelsior Light Cavalry Regiment (VF20 and XF45 respectively), as well as a 10-cent for Camp 43rd Regiment N.Y.S.V. (AU53). Rare notes that provide a tangible glimpse into America in the midst of war. Three note lot.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
