Description: Bert Davies Collection. Traditionally, many collectors rank 1884-S as one of the five big keys to the Morgan dollar series at the UNC level. The problem lies in the fact that up through AU, it's a common coin that suddenly drops off a cliff at MS-60. NGC did not see fit to simply assign an MS-60 grade here to a vibrant, lustrous and downright attractive example that even sports a section of obverse rim toning. Rather, the "cleaned" designation calls undue attention to only a limited number of feathery hairlines distributed across either side. Put this one in your cardboard album, wait some years while it continues to retone, then reward your ingenuity when it comes time to sell.
