Description: Ms. Anna's Collection. BD-3 (R.5+), and apparently later dies. Two major varieties exist, either with or without stars on the obverse, and this is an example of the more common type, provided one would attempt to call any early quarter-eagle "common". The series is rife with evidence of the difficulties faced by the early mint, not the least of which was consistent planchet weight. Ample evidence of adjustment marks shows through much of the obverse periphery -- most of the stars on the right and through a couple of stars on the left, and on the top of the cap -- and suggest this must have been a nicely oversized flan when first rolled out. The patch of parallel lines above STATES are diagnostic of the reverse die, as are the 8x8 star arrangement for the obverse and the "6" in the date overlapping the bottom edge of the portrait. This is not a perfectly preserved coin as is pointed out by the grading disclaimers, but for an early gold type represented by merely ten or fewer known mint-state examples, even a flawed AU coin will draw strong attention, and little criticism by most collectors. Luster persists through the best-protected areas, i.e. at the extreme periphery, although the overall texture has been altered by a careful smoothing process. The overall impression is that of a subdued obverse mated to a yellow-gold reverse for which there is a bit more vibrancy noted. A delicate pinscratch outlines "U" of UNITED, and a few other light sliding abrasions amount to very little distraction overall.
