Description: VAM-3 "capped die", which is also mentioned on the NGC label. The population of silver dollars still in the original GSA holders only dwindles over the passage of time, as they are taken out of government plastic -- and promptly placed into non-government plastic. Fortunately, NGC championed grading of these desirable coins without extraction from their holders, which means the 1879-CC dollars are far less likely today to see unceremonious destruction of their environment. At MS-63, this ideally lustrous if somewhat abraded example serves the needs of most collectors, and it comes with the original certificate and box.

Apparently a very late die-state, the "capped CC" has become somewhat eroded with die use, resulting now in an intriguing, rough patch that technically obscures the under-mintmark. While a lengthy, thin abrasion may draw the eye to the obverse left field, of more concern to grade is a surface scrape just above the ear. Slight greyish toning shows on some portions of the reverse.
