Lot Title: 1888 NGC PR-65 Ultra Cameo
Lot Number: 414
Description: Al Jimi Veres Collection. Mintage: 75 (according to the Redbook - sources disagree slightly). 1 graded PR-65 UCAM, 1 higher at NGC. PCGS has certified a paltry three 1888 proof eagles at the PR-65 DCAM or higher level according to the latest information available. Incredibly, between them, the two major services show a total of eleven grading incidents in any "ultra cameo proof" format. Staggering, eye-popping visual appeal explains NGC's tremendous respect for the quality and state of preservation, which manifests amazingly pristine, even golden hue overall and no visible defects. Prooflike examples exist for the 1888 eagle, but one may verify the use of the true proof reverse die by noting Breen's observations, including mention that it shares the reverse die of 1887 and has a low date in the field. Breen's encyclopedia suggests 25 survivors at most.

The strike seen here cannot be surpassed as it brought up every single possible vestige of detail. In some sense, this includes the marvelous orange peel effect that is always (essentially) seen in the fields for contemporary proofs. This specific coin does have a tiny strikethrough left of "TEN D." which may serve as a pedigree marker, since there are no mentionable post-mint defects that could identify the coin.
