These dazzling proof coins were struck to remember Christopher Columbus' rediscovery of America, which is frequently misunderstood by Americans as having taken place "somewhere off the east coast". In fact, the native Taino people of the islands in the Bahamas discovered Columbus and party, dazed, lost and undoubtedly confused, as he and a motley gang of ship crewmembers stumbled across the sandy beach, perhaps already claiming the "discovery" for Spain.
