Lot Title: 1879-CC GSA PCGS MS-65
Lot Number: 440
Description: S. A. Consignment. Four PCGS GSA and ten NGC, none higher. The 1940s and 1950s saw the release of thousands of 1879-CC silver dollars -- bag quantities, in fact, which resulted in vast representation of the issue in later GSA sales. However, so many were later removed from their GSA slabs that today, many dealers and collectors today kick themselves as the realization has settled in that these are far more desirable still residing in their original government-issued holder than in any other type of enclosure. Fortunately, NGC set the standard by which grading (although not technical "certification") could take place without destroying the large, plastic holders, and PCGS followed suit to some degree, placing, in-effect, a "slab within a slab" in order to encapsulate the full history of the esteemed coins. A tremendous strike leads off the list of accolades here, for which neither side lacks even a smidgeon of detail. Being the first key to the series, this is important, as is the brilliant, coruscating mint luster that dominates the eye-appeal. In keeping with the gem grade level, a number of minute contact marks nip at the surface, especially at the bottom of Liberty's neck, while the reverse actually shows fewer abrasions than expected. VAM-4 has a chip die-defect against the left side of "8" in the date, which makes for rapid attribution, and on the reverse, the mintmark appears shifted left of center, with each "C" leaning right.
