Lot Title: Third Issue fractional currency shield with gray background and Spinner autograph

Description: E.W. Consignment. Fractional Shield presentations hold a special place in the heart of currency enthusiasts, and the grey examples are the most common, with probably more than a couple hundred issued. Infamously, almost all show evidence of water damage but this particular example appears to be unusually nice in that regard, with scarcely an ill effects seen. The edges of the paper have browned a bit as expected, and of course, the second issue 25-cent has greyed due to light exposure. Most intriguing, an extra Spinner note has been hand-autographed and included as an extra, mounted back-up in the upper right hand corner of the presentation. Housed within a non-contemporary frame, but apparently a frame of considerable age. Attached to the back of the presentation is an envelope containing some highly intriguing items, including a note stating the prices of this item as "$4.50 EACH". More important is a hand-written note from Spinner himself at the Treasury of the United States, dated April 6, 1875.
