Lot Title: 1922 $1 Grant Memorial NGC MS-68
Lot Number: 108
Description: S. A. Consignment. 9 graded MS-68, 2 graded MS-68 "star", zero higher at NGC. Numerically, neither service has seen a higher graded Grant dollar with no star, placing this as a candidate for the finest known example. The mint first struck pieces with a star below the final "A" in AMERICA and sold them all for $3 each. The "no star" variety was created, apparently for the sole purpose of coercing collectors to need a second example for their collections -- at a 200% profit for the mint.

Absolutely flawless, the most critical examination of the surface fails to bring to light even the slightest abrasion. Rather, one simple, brief hairline within Grant's beard seems to be the sole grade-affirming factor. This gold dollar possesses keen medium gilt patina overall and orange highlights here and there that suggest an exemplary level of preservation.
