Lot Title: 1829 Curl Base 2 JR-10 NGC Good details/reverse scratched
Lot Number: 797
Description: North Louis County Collection. JR-10 (R.6), the "curled base 2", which has its own Redbook listing and earns a huge premium against the far more common "square base 2". Once considered extremely rare, the die-marriage remains exceptionally elusive in spite of the discovery of a few more specimens over the last forty years or so, when it was first heavily promoted with publication of Early United States Dimes, 1796-1837: A Reference Book of Their Types, Varieties, and Rarity (which is itself a collectable today). Besides its rarity, the JR-10 often gets represented by problematic examples, as an uncharacteristic percentage of survivors show scratches or other damage, and that is so here. It is true that the more important obverse boasts a charming, fully original problem-free aspect that likely grades G-6+ all by itself, but several relatively shallow old scratches in the reverse fields were created early in the dime's life, and are now somewhat worn into the natural patina.
