Lot Title: 1846 Large Date NGC MS-64
Lot Number: 266
Description: The Never-To-CAC Collection. 4 graded MS-64, 2 graded MS-64 "star", zero higher at NGC. PCGS has only ever graded a single example as MS-64 but it has not been attributed, while all six NGC examples are of the "large date" logotype. Curiously, a third of the NGC "pop tops" have earned a star designation for exceptional eye appeal, and if they follow the present example, it must be due to somewhat prooflike character. The fields are not actually mirrored to any depth, but Liberty's frosted portrait contrasts nicely anyhow.

An exceptional strike popped up all of the stars' central details and the eagle appears to be just about perfectly struck up as well, except perhaps a couple of segments at the left (observed) talon. The reverse shows a very thin die crack nearly bisecting vertically, favoring the right side of the shield. On some coins struck later, the strike becomes quite pronounced, which suggest this must be an earlier die-state example. The final characteristic that requires mention is some isolated planchet roughness in the obverse lower right field, as-made. Comparable roughness shows on some of the other known MS-64 examples as well.
