Samuel Clemens' (Mark Twain) hometown of Hannibal rests at the southeast point of Marion County, overlooking the Mississippi River that makes up the state's eastern border. Many sites and events depicted in both The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are based directly on, or associated with Hannibal, and as a result of the author's long running fame, the town is a major tourist attraction.
