Description: Mintage: 38,000. 47 graded MS-66, 14 higher at PCGS. A fair number of 1879 3-cent nickels were apparently saved for posterity out of the low emission, but superb examples in high grade are very scarce, nevertheless. The slinky, shimmering pale frost luster that emanates from this one could scarcely be nicer, although faint milky haze layers over portions of the reverse. The coin is exceedingly well struck, presumably near the end of the run since the presentation is completely brilliant, and not at all semi-prooflike as is sometimes seen.
