Description: And Then... Collection. The logotype for the "3" was modified on the dies for multiple denominations early in 1873 to open up the gaps between the upper and lower ball of the "3", with the intent to make it less resemble an "8" at a glance. However, although the modification occurred early in 1873, the updated obverse dies took some time to travel from Philadelphia all the way to San Francisco, such that the "Closed 3" is actually more often found than "Open 3". Here is a pleasing example that has become rather well abraded, but only by a plethora of evenly distributed, minute abrasions, creating an intriguing and somewhat matte appearance over terrific underlying luster.
