Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1861 Old Reverse - Type 1 PCGS AU-58 (green label)
Lot Number: 242
Description: M. Diatom Collection. The "old reverse" (called Type I by some references, and rarer than the later "new reverse" Type II) alludes to a hub that was discontinued in 1859. Evidently, at some point in the days prior to the Civil War, the old hub was pressed into service, repolished and used to strike a limited number of quarter-eagles, making this a significantly more desirable variety for the series. The point of the lowest arrowhead stands very close to "CA" for the older hub, noticeably nearer than on the "new reverse". Ruddy-gold color fills this example, which isn't so much lustrous as it is just plain flashy on account of the heavily repolished dies.
