Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1871 NGC PR-66 CAMEO CACCAC
Lot Number: 617
Description: The Michael Scot Collection. 14 graded PR-66 CAM, 7 higher at NGC. The mint had been striking proof shield nickels for 6 years by the time this specimen fell off the dies, and had nearly mastered the strong, tough metal, yet problems persisted. The obverse die evidently had to be extensively polished, as implied by rising elevation toward the bottom edge of the shield (corresponding to a recess ground into the die during refinishing). This is a terrific, immaculate example with delightful reflectivity and obvious contrast, especially on the reverse. A very difficult date in a series that remains underappreciated by today's collectors.
