Lot Title: 1873-CC Seated PCGS VF-35
Lot Number: 314
Description: 13 graded VF-35, 43 higher at PCGS. Collectors with the savvy to collect Seated Liberty dollars in the "very fine to extremely fine" range -- a daunting task, but one commanding far better odds of completion than even attempting an "UNC" collection -- instantly recognize 1873-CC as the most elusive Carson City entry. In fact, 1873-CC is probably the second key to the entire series, exceeded in difficulty (albeit by orders of magnitude) only by the infamous 1870-S. This was the year that the Seated Liberty type ended, to be replaced by the Trade dollar series. For that matter, 1873 was a watershed year in the annals of mint production, as the minor denominations of 2-cent, 3-cent and half-dime were forever abolished, while the dime, quarter and half-dollar survived, but with a slight increase in precious metal content as denoted by arrows at their dates.

The entire surface shows substantial defiance against color, as both sides face up as bone-white, and surprising for a large coin with so much wear, the reverse fields still retain flashes of reflectivity, as do protected areas of the obverse. The eagle's plumage appears to enjoy ample definition, enough, in fact to warrant very strong consideration for "XF", which is actually a significant bump in grade for a coin of this scarcity. However, the obverse may teeter on the fine edge between VF-35 and XF-40. In fact, PCGS may have decided the coin has been dipped at some point, and elected to invoke a "silent net grade" that reflects virtually XF sharpness, netted down a smidge. Highly accommodating of the grade, the whole surface displays no evidence at all of damage or adverse contact.
