Lot Title: 1841-C NGC UNC details/cleaned
Lot Number: 175
Description: Mintage: 10,281. Counted among the rarest of Charlotte quarter-eagles, most 1841-Cs are found moderately circulated, and when a stronger example comes to market, there is a very high probability that it will have problems. Surprisingly, these do come decently sharp, but this is an anomalous example that seems on par with the best strikes seen, as the striking pressure was sufficient to raise a knifelike rim completely around both sides. Remarkable! Unfortunately, despite the scarcity of this coin, NGC was not willing to grant a straight grade, and calls attention to cleaning. The glossy texture undoubtedly owes some to a slightly aggressive treatment, but we have all seen worse in slabs with no such disclaimer. The cataloger does not claim the coin warrants the value of a problem-free MS-60, but it is worth noting that between them, NGC and PCGS have certified a grand total of SEVEN pieces grading MS-60 or better.
