Lot Title: 1915-S Panama-Pacific PCGS MS-67+ CACCAC
Lot Number: 942
Description: T. A. Consignment. Mintage: 27,134. 22 graded MS-67+, 4 higher at PCGS. San Francisco had scarcely recovered from the great earthquake of 1906 when preparations were put into action for the Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915 to be held in that city. The event was nominally intended to mark the opening of the Panama Canal. As part of the festivities, the mint had the honor of striking the exquisite design as part of a group of coins whose sale was intended to raise awareness and money for the city. The coins were actually struck on-site, produced off of a fourteen ton press that had been shipped all the way from Philadelphia to California. A sensational example, nearly staggering from the standpoint of aesthetics, the present superb-gem stands head-and-shoulders above the quality often seen for lesser mint-state Pan-Pacs. Luster sheens and shimmers with the kind of satiny effect not usually seen, as the type tends to come with "harder" luster. More important perhaps, the coin's inimitable presence showcases lovely, near-perfect concentric rings of color, which includes wavering bands of coral-gold, indigo, chartreuse-cobalt and lavender-grey. The obverse seems to be complete free from contact, while on the reverse, a trio of tiny reed marks float gently above the uppermost sprig toward the right.
