Lot Title: 1925-D NGC MS-64
Lot Number: 663
Description: Bert Davies Collection. For many strike-challenged issues within the series, the reverse typically trails the obverse in sharpness. 1925-D is a well-known strike rarity, but in this case, it happens to be the bison side that possesses surprisingly bold sharpness, such that even the curls at the top of the head are individually delineated. The end of the tail is split and the mintmark was nicely brought up as well -- hardly a given for mid-1920s mintmarked issues. On the obverse, some softness becomes apparent, as the finer, most intricate details lack precision, although LIBERTY does stand clear of the rim. Due to the wobbly die, isolated areas of strike-doubling can be seen. The grade seems to be determined by a pair of modestly sharp ticks behind the nose, but the surface seems to have been preserved with very nice, original patina.
