Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1916 Double Die Obverse PCGS VF-20
Lot Number: 654
Description: Whisenhunt Collection. A dramatic and famous blunder on the part of the Philadelphia mint, the heavy doubling is impossible to miss even at the middle-grade level, and is all the more appealing given the amazingly original quality of the surface. Rich, mellow dove-grey completely blankets the surface and renders even bolder the design, given the modestly darker greyish accents within some lower relief areas. Remarkable for the grade, evidence of luster remains within the well-protected reverse fields beneath the bison. Minor streakiness of the obverse planchet is of no distraction whatsoever, and actually only attests to the fully vintage quality. An amazingly beautiful coin that would be desirable even if it were not the highly esteemed doubled-die.
