Lot Title: 1881-S NGC MS-67 Star CACCAC
Lot Number: 412
Description: Whisenhunt Collection. 4601 graded MS-67, 132 graded MS-67 "star", 308 higher at NGC. Why quote such a large population statistic for an ultra-common silver dollar? The Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award is never awarded purely on the basis of grade, which is scarcely even pertinent anyway to the "rarity" of the 1881-S silver dollar even at the lofty MS-67 assessment. Up to ten-thousand (!) might exist at the grade or higher between just the major grading services, with perhaps many hundreds or thousands still awaiting discovery from within innumerable rolls that still remain in storage and available to the market today. Yet the present 1881-S silver dollar, common as dirt in nearly any other presentation format, is an incredibly rich, beautiful jewel of a coin, absolutely erupting with phenomenal luster that bends and bedazzles the eye in an incomparable array of broad, white, illuminated whirling triangles. The secret lies within the spangling array of beautiful colors, including shimmering scarlet-gold, turquoise, lime-green, and olive-grey. Over time, the reverse has become completely drenched in coral-gold with shimmering salmon-lavender undertones. This coin boasts an incredible, exactingly full strike, absolutely flawless cheek, and in fact, an obverse so flawless overall that a trivial mark on the lowest point of the neck seems to be the only thing that could serve as pedigree marker. Trivial luster grazes above eagle's head can be laughed off as just so much "white noise". An amazing coin -- amazingly common by most standards, yet a jewel truly worth coveting, and placing into a top caliber collection.
