Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1859-S NGC AU-55
Lot Number: 342
Description: Bert Davies Collection. Mintage: 20,000. Ex- Dick Osburn Collection. Brilliant ivory-white surfaces display no sign of toning at all despite a few points of wear. 1859-S represents the first emission of silver dollars from San Francisco, produced for trade with China such that (nearly) all were exported, and that helps explain why so few uncirculated pieces remain in existence. A few that returned to the United States managed to evade heavy circulation, leaving brilliant examples such as this to serve in the stead of a very expensive, true mint-state specimen. Small abrasions and hairlines are inevitable for coin of this heft, but none is individually distracting.
