Lot Title: 1922-S PCGS MS-64+
Lot Number: 316
Description: 54 graded MS-64+, 22 higher at PCGS. 2.66-million 1922-S Saint-Gaudens double-eagles were struck yet the date is recognized as a semi-key issue in all but the most mundane of circulated grades. At the gem level, a collector might expect to pay roughly five times the cost of an MS-64, which inserts any MS-64 "plus" into a particularly enticing price-point. Stunning luster defies any attempts to suppress grade consideration for this blazing specimen, but the cautious bidder may notice a few obverse abrasions, first left of Liberty's torso, and then a scattering of the usual tiny marks inevitable below the full MS-65 grade. Strike quality is about on-par with branch-mint production of the 1920s, since Liberty's face lacks full expression, and slight softness shows in the eagle's breast feathers. A captivating example with admitted technical flaws, but an overall appearance that represents as being a bit nicer than the sum of the parts.
