Lot Title: 1908 No Motto NGC MS-64 CACCAC
Lot Number: 299
Description: With the dispersal of hoards and older accumulations, the 1908 "no motto" double-eagle easily ranks as having one of the highest certified populations across the board of all the U.S. compendium, and makes for an interesting statistical study. For our purpose, let's ignore grades below XF-40, for which the grading services hilariously show two incidents, perhaps instigated by collectors seeking "lowest graded" honors. The highest grade awarded by either services has been MS-68, leaving a tidy range of fifteen grade levels from EF-40 to MS-68, according to the following table: EF-40 (6) EF-45 (15) AU-50 (31) AU-53 (17) AU-55 (254) AU-58 (1794) MS-60 (1089) MS-61 (7978) MS-62 (50953) MS-63 (96669) MS-64 (89129) MS-65 (34759) MS-66 (9277) MS-67 (405) MS-68 (18) The distribution basically represents a nice, well-formed bell curve when plotted out in a graph, but with a couple of interesting observations worthy of note. First of all, the services seem absolutely loathe to implement MS-60. Indeed, this is the only grade point with significant population for which a bar graph shows an aberration such that it has barely half as many events as AU-58, and practically only one-eighth as many events as MS-66! Also, "AU-53", one of the least-understood grades, shows a lower population than AU-50 (and strangely, it appears to be a more difficult grade to hit than MS-68). EF-40 and EF-45 are both rarer than MS-68 as well. These grading populations likely don't get skewed much by re-grades, either, because the 1908 "no motto" is so common at every level (and not even truly "rare" at MS-68!) that it is very seldom resubmitted for upgrade. What conclusions can you infer?
