Description: 66 graded AU-55, 65 higher at NGC. Carson City issues from the two preceding years are rarer, but the 1872-CC is hardly common, and population reports suggest that no more than two fistfuls remain in existence at the mint-state level, placing tremendous pressure on finer "about-uncirculated" specimens. From the standpoint of original coins, this one is a stunner, as it features lovely pale grey toning over lustrous, deeply golden surfaces. Furthermore, neither side displays an excess of marks as is often seen for contemporary CC issues, showing instead some pleasing, smooth wear and no hairlines. Sharpness is only about average in aggregate from a typical strike and a few points worth of wear.
