Description: Huge Shades Consignment. 175 graded AU-58, 45 higher at NGC. Philadelphia churned out nearly 700-thousand "with motto" double-eagles in the year following the conclusion of the Civil War, but attrition played a considerable role in their rapid demise such that very few exist in mint-state today. Those that are circulated tend to be heavily worn or mishandled, and even rare uncircualated specimens are practically always found heavily bagmarked. Very little friction plays over the highest relief details, yet the luster remains essentially full through the fields. Myriad micro-abrasions are inevitable for the type but their even distribution helps downplay their effect. A lovely, seemingly vintage example.
