Description: Prior to recovery of mint-state examples from the S.S. Republic and Brother Jonathan shipwrecks, the 1863-S was very difficult to locate in mint-state grades, and better AU examples were the de-facto standard for most collections. The present example would have been ideal since it offers the vast majority of the original flowline texture, as well as essentially all of the original details. A noticeable contact mark at the exact center of the obverse forms the only minor distraction.
