Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1855-C PCGS AU-50
Lot Number: 140
Description: R. W. Consignment. Mintage: 6966. 10 graded AU-50, 63 higher at PCGS. 1855-C represents the scarcest obtainable Charlotte gold dollar entry, stemming from an emission of under seven-thousand pieces that was then subjected to widespread circulation. Mint-state examples are very rare, and nicer AU representatives difficult to come by. Technically, the strike seems a little stronger than what is typically seen, with the reverse showing particularly nice delineation of the wreath's vegetation. The bow is a bit bluntly defined, but one can readily see that the dies clashed strongly, lessening their capability to impart true sharpness. Perhaps most memorable, neither side displays any contact marks of note, although sporadic, faint hairlines dart around the obverse left field.
