Lot Title: South Africa - 1889 Cape of Good Hope private Proof pattern UNC
Lot Number: 79
Description: Bert Davies Collection. KM#X-1. Mintage: 20. Obv: VICTORIA D:G: BRITANNIAE REG: F: D: in legend around young portrait of queen; Rev: CAPE OF GOOD HOPE / 1889 surrounds crest with two unicorns. Previously considered a pattern, Krause-Mishler now designates this a proof striking, which echoes the remarkable, concave brilliance that extensively surrounds Queen Victoria's portrait, and also makes some impression upon the reverse. About half the obverse and two-thirds of the reverse gleam with flame-orange brilliance, balanced against intriguing turquoise-green. Minor scribbles in the obverse left field and scattered micro-ticks likely lead to a "very select" proof grade.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
