Lot Title: 1914 PCGS PR-66 (shield)
Lot Number: 661
Description: 149 graded PR-66, 118 higher at PCGS. Hands-down one of the celebrated proof type designs within the entire U.S. catalog, the early proof bison nickels are an incomparable example of the minter's art. The early dies retained virtually all of James E. Fraser's intended details, lost during later years after the dies were reworked. This is a stunningly sharp example (as are most), providing the utmost in intricate detail, such as the terminal of the Indian's braid and the distinctive splits within the end of the bison's tail. Amazingly, some delicate matte texture rests over the horn, and every single conceivable fold and wrinkle in the animal's hide was fully realized by the strike. The reverse displays some noticeable platinum-grey patina, while the obverse shimmers a bit more brilliantly, as if the coin spent some time in a one-sided album. Even attempting to pick apart the quality results in merely two trifles - a carbon fleck off to the extreme left, and a pinpoint carbon spot just left of the eye.
