Lot Title: Two 1892 World's Columbian Expo Eglit-101 90mm, one Gilt and one Bronze, both NGC PF-65
Lot Number: 527
Description: Eglit-101 was also struck in aluminum, so-called "white metal", and silver, but included here are only the bronze ("AE") and gilt examples, although that in itself creates an impressive pair of imposing medals. EAch measures 90 millimeters in diameter. The bronze medal has acquired marvelous, sweet chocolate brown patina, just about ideal as can be for a large medal of this size. Fewer than a handful of scattered carbon spots distribute widely across the obverse, while the reverse has avoided such distraction almost completely. As with the gilt example, there is evidnece of rust on both dies, shows as tiny raised pimples on the cheek. The gilt example may, in fact, show a bit more rusty texture than its companion, and the fields display lovely silky sheen, slightly flashy but subtly lustrous as well. Fine, sandy granularity seems to have been the textural intent overall. Some very minor thinning of the golden layers appears on the gilt example, a typical characteristic of the fragile veneer being exposed to storage friction.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
