Lot Title: (1943) Steel cent planchet strip
Lot Number: 485
Description: Empty Stallion Collection. Steel cent strips that come to market were apparently sourced to the Denver mint, and are often shaped irregularly or trimmed at strange angles. This example features 33 complete holes, and four half holes, two at each end. Such punched stock is called "webbing" after it comes to the public market, but for precious metal (silver, gold) coins of the era, the webbing would have been remelted and put back into new stock. The metal stock for 1943 cents was comrpised of a steel core and a very thin layer of zinc plating bonded to the obverse and reverse only (leaving the steel edges exposed to the environment). Thus, such stock could not be easily remelted since it would not have been feasible to re-separate the steel from the zinc, and would have resulted in a steel-zinc amalgamate, not proper for creation of new steel cent stock. The surface of this strip has become oxidized to smoe extent, much like a steel cent would, hence we might call the grade "fine" or better. A highly unusual item, popular with numismatists as well as World War II buffs in general.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
